History

Historical notes: The subject property is part of 1200 acres granted by Governor Brisbane to merchant James Chandler in 1831. The house was likely built between 1910 and 1920, when the listed occupant was George Olds. In 1929 the occupant advertised for plumbers to connect sewer (‘Tenders’, SMH, 12 September 1929). By 1943 Charles and Elizabeth Thacker were in residence (‘Deaths’, SMH, 19 December 1934). Charles Thacker was a headmaster of several schools in the St George district, including Kingsgrove Public and Carlingford Public, during his 48-year career as a headmaster (‘Personal’, SMH, 2 May 1929). In 1947 the occupant of the house, E C Heffernan, won first prize in the state lottery (‘State Lottery’, Canberra Times, 10 October 1947).
