Statement of significance:

The house at 62 Keira Street is of significance for the Wollongong area for historical and aesthetic reasons and reasons of representativeness. The house, built c. 1918, has mixed features of Federation and the older Victorian period and presents an example of transition between the aesthetics of these periods. The house is readily identifiable as part of historic building stock and strongly contributes to the streetscape and the townscape character, additionally as part of a group of adjacent historic houses.

Physical description: Single storey house has face brick walls and hipped corrugated iron roof with projecting gables, one facing the street and one side gable. Gables have decorated barge boards. Two brick chimneys have corbels and terracotta pots. Return verandah has corrugated iron skillion roof supported by cast iron openwork columns. Windows are large double casement multipane windows with top lights. Windows under the projecting gables have metal skillion awnings on cast iron brackets. Front door is timber door with panels with bolection moulding. Front fence is metal fence with spearhead tops.
Modifications and dates: In 1996 two dual occupancies were constructed on the site. House and Dual Occupancies subdivided in 2020.

Historical notes: (Terry Kass 2011): Henry Williams, plumber of Wollongong bought the corner allotment of the Congregational Church Manse subdivision in September 1918. (C T 2714 f 243). This house was probably complete when Williams leased it to William Henry Leonard, millwright, of Wollongong in December 1921. (C T 2884 f 99). The October 1922 valuation by the Valuer-General listed a brick on stone house with five rooms and kitchen covered with an iron roof, named ‘Wiarton’ owned by Henry Williams on this site. There was also a brick garage with an iron roof. (Valuer-General, Valuation Cards, Wollongong, SRNSW 13/7927, Keira St, No 1792)

Recommended management:

Retain and conserve all original or early elements. Changes should not impact on views to the building and its interpretation to general public. Existing verandah should be kept with all details. Any future additions should be located at the back and not visible from the publicly accessible areas. Original form should remain as existing, without additions to sides or top of the building.
