Statement of significance:

The house at 20 Manson Road Strathfield is of significance for historic, associative, aesthetic, and for reasons of rarity and representativeness. The house is one of the early and aesthetically distinguished Bungalow cottages in the section of Strathfield within the City of Canada Bay LGA. The original and early elements of the house present a representative example of high quality Interwar period architecture in Strathfield, in spite of intrusive attic “pop-top” additions. The house exemplifies technology and taste of its original period and style. It demonstrates excellent craftsmanship and is architecturally of interest due to the representative elements of early house styles in the area. As part of the group of adjacent cottages of similar age in the area, and with presentation enhanced by the near-by street trees, it is illustrating the typical development of the period and makes an important contribution to our understanding of the town character and history.

Description

Physical description: Symmetrical Late Federation house. Liver brick with hipped, terracotta roof. Matching gables on either side of recessed entry. Arched entry with exposed rafters. Leadlight, multiple casement bay windows. Brick fence with tubular post infill.

History

Historical notes: Property was created by re-subdivision of Lots 4 and 5 of the DP 4386 (of 1904) into DP 321309 in 1928, suggesting a likely date of construction of the house.
The house at 20 Manson Road cannot be identified in Sands Directories until 1932-33. In 1932/1933 the listed house resident was William G. Crawford.
The aerial photographs indicate matching footprint of the house in 1943 and in 2017, albeit upper level additions have taken place at unknown time.

Recommended management:

Conserve and retain all original or early features. In case of redevelopment in the area, the property may be amalgamated, preferably together with adjacent Nos. 10, 14-18, 22-24 and 30 Manson Road, and house reused in residential, or light commercial use (e.g. offices, professional practice rooms) or as a community facility on a Strata title. In any redevelopment, the intrusive roof attic additions should be removed and original roof form reconstructed. Any future infill development on either side and at rear should mirror the rear and side setbacks of the house. Any new garages and vehicular cross-over should be at least 15m away from the item, and street planting preserved in any future development. A coordinated use of Leicester Avenue and Manson Road items should be considered. Original fence should be conserved.
