Statement of significance:

The station building at Lue is a good representative example of a third class, standard country station building with signal box and separate toilet blocks. It is a prominent feature that can be seen from Mudgee Road and remains a significant element within the townscape of Lue. The station building at Lue is one of a series of similar buildings between Wallerawang and Mudgee, all of which vary in size and design but also display some unity in their design and construction. The Cox Road Underbridge is a good representative example of a 1880s timber ballast top opening designed by John Whitton. The Whitton-type ballast-top timber girder bridges are rare, and the sections of this bridge type along the Gwabegar Line may be the last extant examples of Whitton-type ballast top timber girder bridges with 29.5ft (9m) openings. Description

Physical description: Extant items include the type 4, brick station building (standard, roadside, third class building, 1884) with gabled corrugated iron roof and tall chimneys, concrete panel type 5 signal box (1920), brick platform face, and loading bank. platform face - brick,Lue Railway Station Building:Terracotta painted symmetrical brick building with corrugated iron clad gable roof with central transverse gable and two painted brick chimneys. Painted cream decorative timber barge boards, timber dentils and pendants. Concrete detailing (sills and plinth) Matching brick pavilions to either side with corrugated iron gable roofs (facing platform). Matching pavilions to either side. West pavilion connected to main structure by corrugated skillion roof and clad infill structure with timber ventilation along upper wall. East pavilion with single brick chimney and painted ledged and sheeted door. Central double doors to main structure at roadside with fanlight to platform, flanked by windows. Additional two windows in main building facing road. Additional single doors with fanlights to platform provide access to rooms at each end. Corrugated iron projecting awning to platform with timber valance, timber square profile posts and cast iron decorative lacework. Underneath of awning painted palm green. Brick platform face with gravelled surface. Two early-colonial style windows to east and north fa├žades with angled drainpipe around east side window. Extended eaves painted mint green underneath and with dentils. Single raised half-glazed timber door with four fixed glass panes. (GML, 2016)Cox Road Bridge:The Cox Road Underbridge is a 'Whitton'-type ballast-top timber girder bridge. Likely dimensions: 29ft 6in (9m) ballast-top timber openings (to be confirmed), 7 spans in total. Trestles are supported on concrete walings. Timber abutments are set directly into the earth embankment.

Railway Station Building assessed as Fair (GML, 2016) - Vegetation around carefully maintained all sides except for north platform side; roof, chimneys, gutters, roof grates in good condition; windows and glazing boarded up and some water staining to concrete plinth; deterioration to some areas of drain pipes, timber posts, barge boards and timber valance; some bird guano damage to paintwork.Assessed as having medium integrity (GML, 2016) - Structure and key features mostly intact, windows boarded up, infill between pavilion and building removed, other features visible.

History

Historical notes: The official opening of the Mudgee line in September 1884 was the culmination of over twenty years effort on the part of the Mudgee community to secure a rail line to Mudgee and surrounding districts, including Lue, Rylstone and Kandos. Agitation for a railway service to the Mudgee district was led by a committee of local residents which was formed in 1870 and later became the Mudgee Railway League (Sheedy, 1988).A line from Bathurst to Mudgee and Walgett was proposed in 1873 but never constructed, with a later survey (in 1876) confirming the eventual route via Wallerawang and Capertee. By 1879 the NSW Government confirmed that the line to Mudgee would be built and on 15 May 1881 the line opened as far as Capertee. In the same year a contract was awarded for construction of the remaining section of the line from Capertee to Mudgee. The single track line from Rylstone to Mudgee opened on 10 September 1884 (Sheedy, 1988; Cottee, 2004).The station building at Lue was officially opened on 10 September 1884. The line was extended to Gulgong and Dunedoo in 1910 and to Coonabarabran in 1917. Passenger services to Lue were suspended in c1985 and freight services to Lue suspended in 1992 (SRA, 1993).References:David Sheedy Pty.
