Statement of significance:

Inter-Urban Trailer Car ETB 6029 has heritage significance, as an example of early attempts by the Railways to provide high speed, frequent and comfortable transport to the near country areas surrounding Sydney during the mid 20th century. These cars were also significant for the first use of stainless steel on passenger rolling stock on the NSW Railways as previous steel cars had been riveted or welded using conventional techniques. With their polished unpainted fluted stainless steel sheathing, standard NSW Railways tapered shape at the driver’s end and large headlamp mounted above the centre inter-car connection door, these cars presented a distinctive appearance that reflected the standard of modern carriage design at the time. This distinctive appearance has however been affected somewhat by the installation of Beclawat windows to this carriage in the 1970s.

Physical description: EXTERNAL
Single deck stainless steel trailer car. The car has fluted stainless steel sheathing and retains its original windows. Entrance doors are located at each end of the carriage.

INTERNAL
The car has entrance doors set at each end of the passenger compartment creating a saloon area for most of the carriage length. The saloon area is divided into two areas, a small compartment set aside for non-smokers and a larger one for smokers. (Although smoking was abolished in interurban trains the partition has remained). Toilets are located at one end of the car, one toilet being nominated for each sex. Seating is two and two transverse style. Forced ventilation was fitted and the windows were able to be opened. The end walls of the car are flat, matching the toilet end of the control motor car. When coupled into a four-car set the train presents a uniform appearance and appears as a single unit. This car retains its original lift up windows.

History

Historical notes: Inter-Urban Trailer Car ETB 6029 was built by Commonwealth Engineering in 1958 and entered service May 1959 as a first class car. These cars were specifically designed for the electrified section of railway over the Blue Mountains to Lithgow and later to Gosford, Newcastle and Wollongong, and replaced the old timber-bodied stock that had been used for many year behind steam locomotives. Their rapid acceleration and high average speed allowed journeys to the near country areas to be speeded up. This in turn popularised the Blue Mountains, and Central Coast as dormitory areas for the Sydney metropolitan area. These cars were the first on the NSWR to be built using the technique of spot welding. Previous steel cars have been riveted or welded using conventional techniques. In the mid-1970s this car was reclassed as economy class. It is unknown what date the car was condemned.

Inter-Urban Trailer Car ETB 6029 has low historical significance. This type of car is significant as the first attempt by the Railways to provide high speed, frequent and comfortable transport to the near country areas surrounding Sydney during the mid 20th century. Electric trains replaced the slow and dirty steam trains which previously performed the task. This car is also historically significant as it is amongst the first carriages to be constructed using the spot-welded method of construction.

Inter-Urban Trailer Car CF 6029 has a high level of technical significance. The construction of these carriages marked another important step in the development of alternative materials for carriage construction. Previous steel cars had been riveted or welded using conventional techniques. The welding of these cars was of the Spot type, developed by E. Budd in the USA. This method of construction was to have a great impact on future development of rolling stock design and construction in NSW.
