Hunter Valley environmental water allocation update
A release of water for the environment in the Hunter Valley will be delayed following a process of community consultation.
The Department of Planning Industry and Environment – Environment, Energy and Science met with community members throughout June and July 2019, seeking their views of the release of the Environmental Water Allocation for the Hunter River.
The Environmental Water Allocation is part of the Water Sharing Plan for the Hunter Regulated River Water Source 2016.
Consultation with the community, including key water users, highlighted general support for the release. There was also some feedback regarding the need to be sensitive to drought affected communities and concern for the water security of these communities.
The department has considered this feedback and decided to delay the proposed August 2019 release. The department will now establish an advisory group with representatives from the community, including key water users, to review and inform a possible release of the Environmental Water Allocation in June 2020. This group will also help inform longer term planning for future releases of water for the environment.
More information about water for the environment can be found on the department’s website at Water for the environment. Resources for the Hunter Valley are now being developed for the site.
