Kwiambal National Park hazard reduction burn

The National Parks and Wildlife Service, with the NSW Rural Fire Service, is planning a hazard reduction burn for Kwiambal National Park this Sunday, 24 April.

The burn will cover 280-hectare of the park which is 26km north of Ashford and 89km north of Inverell on the western slopes of the Northern Tablelands.

The burn is to reduce fuel loads in the Kwiambal National Park as part of the Northern Tablelands Area Hazard Reduction Program.

Smoke plumes will be visible from neighbouring rural properties.

People living in and around Ashford are likely to see a smoke haze particularly in late evening and early morning this Sunday.

All walking tracks and roads in that area of the park will be closed until it is safe to reopen them.

Motorists are advised to take care if there is reduced visibility due to smoke and drive to conditions.

The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) hazard reduction program for 2022 is focused on essential burns to protect park neighbours, assets or significant habitat to ensure ongoing recovery of the wildlife impacted by summer bushfires.

Undertaking burns when conditions are right to ensure they are safe and effective is an important part of managing the potential risk of bushfire to communities and the environment.

This work also provides firefighters safe zones and access where they can defend properties should a bushfire occur.

All burns across NSW will continue to be coordinated with the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) to ensure the impact on the community, including from smoke, are assessed at a regional level.
