Nation's most sustainable property portfolios recognised by NABERS

Australian property portfolios' environmental sustainability achievements are showcased in NABERS' first-ever Sustainable Portfolios Report released today.

The report has been produced by the National Australian Built Environment Rating System (NABERS) in response to industry demand for a verified portfolio report to help with their environmental performance management and market position.

NABERS Director, Carlos Flores, said: "Australian property portfolios in the office and shopping centre markets have

improved their sustainability at world-leading pace in the past decade. This report recognises their commitment to the environment and shows the broader industry what they have achieved."

"The property sector is key to tackling climate change because buildings typically are responsible for 40% of the world's energy use, up to 30% of carbon emissions and 20% of available drinking water.

The report includes portfolio ratings for 11 individual companies representing 19 investment funds, covering a total of 319 offices and shopping centres.

Mr Flores said: "Australian property companies have led the world in disclosing their sustainability performance to investors using NABERS for many years now.

"However, this information has not been as readily available to the general public. The NABERS Sustainable Portfolios report will allow anyone to see the sustainability performance of Australia's leading property companies in 2018 easily at no cost."

"We hope that this initiative will help many property sector leaders share their excellent sustainability results with the broader community. We also hope more portfolios join in future reports, reaping the benefits of lower energy and water costs while contributing to a better future."

The report will be on the NABERS website at NABERS Sustainable Portfolios Report, showing each company's portfolio result for energy and water usage for offices and for shopping centres.
