The reserves contain mostly relatively undisturbed high elevation old growth open forest. In addition to a number of regionally uncommon flora species, an endangered species of mintbush was rediscovered in Mount Mackenzie Nature Reserve after 100 years of being thought extinct. The reserves also contain 2 endangered ecological communities, New England Peppermint Woodland and White Box Yellow Box Blakely's Red Gum Woodland, and 5 threatened fauna species.

This plan of management was originally adopted on 8 December 2011. It was amended in July 2025.
