Which licence should I choose if I want to keep native animals as pets?

You need a licence to keep most native birds, reptiles, mammals and frogs as pets. Some animals are only available to advanced animal keepers. They have many years of experience keeping species that maybe difficult to maintain or are of higher conservation significance.

Licence types

No licence required

What you can keep: Exotic (non-native) bird species, 41 native bird species, dingo

Companion animal keepers licence

What you can keep: Just one animal listed as companion class on the Current species list (PDF 419KB). Species must be nominated at the time of the application.

Eligibility: Must be over 16 years of age.

Record keeping: Not required.

Fee and term: $50 for 5 years. Discounts available for pensioners and online applications.

Class 1 native animal keepers licence

What you can keep: Over 300 types of native birds, reptiles, amphibians and mammals listed as class 1 on the Current species list (PDF 419KB). A person with a basic knowledge of the needs of the animals should have no problems meeting their needs.

Eligibility: Must be over 16 years of age.

Record keeping: Holdings must be lodged annually via the native animal keeper e-book.

Fee and term: $63 per class for 2 years. $143 per class for 5 years. Discounts available for pensioners and online applications.

Advanced class native animal keepers licence

What you can keep: Animals listed as advanced class on the Current species list (PDF 419KB). These species generally require a large commitment of time and experience to maintain.

Eligibility: Must be over 18 years of age and have at least 2 years of experience in caring for relevant species through a lower class of licence. Additional requirements (PDF 15KB) for some applications.

Record keeping: Holdings must be lodged annually via the native animal keeper e-book.

Fee and term: $120 per class for 2 years or $240 per class for 5 years. Discounts available for pensioners.
