Bottlenose dolphins are commonly seen all along the NSW coastline. They usually spotted in bays and estuaries opening to the sea or surfing in the waves. Rocky coastal headlands provide ideal vantage points for watching dolphins from the shore.
Two of the best places to see them are Jervis Bay on the South Coast and Port Stephens just north of Newcastle which has a resident population of 90 to 120 dolphins. Dolphins are also often sighted in the Forster/Great Lakes region. Dolphin-watching cruises are run from all these ports.
If you find a beached dolphin, keep it wet and cool, and call ORRCA's 24-hour rescue line: 02 9415 3333.
