Widespread dust storms are very unusual in winter but are a possibility this year considering the low groundcover and ongoing dry conditions. The widely occurring dust storm on 5 May 2018 was driven by strong westerly winds. Visibility dropped below 500m at some sites.
DustWatch report May 2018
May 2018 had the second highest dust activity since DustWatch began in 2005, only surpassed by May 2015 when a severe dust storm affected southern New South Wales.
