Planning phase continues

The planning phase is underway for stage two of Yathong feral predator-free area in the Central Mallee, including:

  • completion of a review of environmental factors  
  • procurement documentation for construction
  • Eradication plan

Ecological surveys

Baseline surveys have been completed and data is being reviewed to develop Yathong’s Ecological Health Monitoring Framework.
Each monitoring site has measured biodiversity indicators using a standard set of tools and methods such as:

  • pitfall traps
  • camera stations
  • acoustic recording stations
  • vegetation plots


Grazing studies are also underway assessing the impacts of vertebrate herbivores.  

Intensive Pest Monitoring

Intensive pest monitoring continues prior to the eradication phase.

Construction has concluded

Construction works has concluded with the Northern compartment (Stage one) located north of the Western Fire Trail fully enclosing 8285-hectares. 
 

Construction works included:

  • clearing the fence corridor
  • upgrading/building trails for pest management and monitoring
  • building 40 kilometres of conservation fence and
  • establishing ten sliding vehicle gates

Updates on local conditions

No impact will occur to main roads and travel through Yathong Nature Reserve remain open during the construction period. 

The following roads will be subject to temporary closures over the course of the construction phase:

  • Western Fire Trail and
  • Greens Management Trail
