Major remediation works required on Tallowa Dam Road
Significant remediation works are required to repair a damaged section of Tallowa Dam Road in Morton National Park in the Kangaroo Valley, following a landslip which has damaged the road and caused safety risks.
As a result, a 1.5-kilometre section of Tallowa Dam Road, located east of the dam crest, is closed to the public until mid-2027. There is no vehicle access to Tallowa Dam until the repair work is completed.
The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is undertaking major repair works on a 1.5-kilometre section of the Tallowa Dam Road which was extensively damaged during successive flood and high rainfall events.
Technical investigations have confirmed that substantial geotechnical and road reconstruction works are required to stabilise and restore the road to the necessary standard for safe use. This includes stabilising the landslip area, replacing major culverts and strengthening sections of the road.
NPWS is currently finalising the detailed construction plans and will engage a specialist contractor to undertake the works.
Road works are expected to commence in late 2026 and be completed in mid-2027, weather permitting.
Work will be delivered in accordance with environmental and cultural heritage planning approvals.
As well as restoring access, the work aims to improve the road's resilience to future weather events, improve safety and help reduce the risk of ongoing closures.
No vehicle access to Tallowa Dam
For safety, Tallowa Dam Road is closed from east of the dam crest in Morton National Park until mid-2027. There is no vehicle access to Tallowa Dam over this time.
Options for visitors
- Paddlers can still reach the area but must enter the lake at either Beehive Point or Bendeela.
- The Three Views Walking Track in Morton National Park remains open, offering scenic views over the dam.
