Update on upgrade works at Green Cape Lightstation Precinct

Stage 1 works recommenced on 12 January 2026.

The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has been working on rising damp repairs, as well as structural and carpentry repair works to the Head and Assistant Lightkeeper’s buildings. These works are critical to ensure the safety of visitors in the building and must be completed for other works to continue. Replacement of the existing roof and guttering has also begun.

Works include:

  • replacing the stainless-steel roof sheets
  • improvements to the chimneys
  • new gutters and down piping.

Painting works have also started on site with repainting of the chimneys and fascias on the Head Lightkeeper’s building.

Stage 1 works are estimated to be complete in mid-2026, subject to weather and other potential construction delays. We will continue to provide updates regarding Stage 1 works as they progress.

The Lightstation cottages and Telegraph Station accommodation are currently closed to visitors while NPWS undertakes upgrades to these buildings.

Green Cape car park, lookout and surrounding walking tracks will remain open during this time.

NPWS is continuing with heritage approvals for Stage 2 of the upgrade works. These include:

  • essential upgrades to the existing gas, electricity and sewerage systems that service the Green Cape Lightstation Precinct
  • remediation of a landslip that occurred in 2022.

These works are crucial for safety and access to the Green Cape Lightstation Precinct.

Green Cape Lighthouse reinstatement

NPWS is excited to announce that in February, the Green Cape Lighthouse was officially reinstated.

Works included the installation of a high-power LED light source in the traditional lens, new battery system and servicing of the existing mercury-float pedestal.

These works were completed by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority and mark a significant event in the history of the lighthouse, which had been decommissioned in 1994.
