What is GREP?
The Government Resource Efficiency Policy (GREP) was announced in 2014 to help the government achieve its commitment to making NSW a more sustainable, liveable and resilient state.
The policy applies to NSW government agencies. It requires agencies to implement resource efficiency measures and to report on their progress against GREP to the Department of Planning and Environment.
GREP includes measures, targets and minimum standards to drive efficiency in four key areas:
- energy use
- water use
- waste management
- air quality
What does it mean for your agency?
Compliance with GREP is compulsory for all budget dependent government agencies.
Your agency must:
- incorporate resource efficiency into all major decisions
- address the challenge of rising energy, water and waste management costs
- contribute to improving air quality
- leverage your purchasing power when procuring resource efficient technology and services
- publish annual statements about your performance.
Local government, state-owned corporations, public trading enterprises and public financial enterprises are strongly encouraged to adopt the policy.
Reporting on resource efficiency
Every year, NSW government agencies report on their progress towards resource efficiency to the Department of Planning and Environment.
In turn, we publish the annual NSW Government Resource Efficiency Policy Progress Report on our website. The report outlines government progress towards achieving its GREP policy objectives.
