Blue Mountains National Park

Guided tours

We offer guided walks and other Discovery activities in Blue Mountains National Park. Led by experienced local Discovery rangers, these activities let you uncover the little-known secrets of the mountains. How did Aboriginal people live in this rugged landscape? Where are the best wildflowers? What cultural messages do Aboriginal rock engravings carry? How old are those enormous rainforest trees? What native animals come out at sunset? Find out on a Discovery tour.

Discovery activities vary through the year. They can include:

  • guided bushwalks
  • night-time spotlighting tours
  • cultural talks and activities with Aboriginal Discovery rangers
  • 4WD vehicle tag-along tours.

For more information, check out the guided tours below.

Other commercial tours

You can go on a huge variety of other tours and excursions in the Blue Mountains area. The possibilities include:

  • Katoomba's Scenic Skyway, which starts from the top of the valley at Cliff Drive and takes you on a cable ride suspended 305 m above the floor of the Jamison Valley.
  • The Scenic Railway, also in Katoomba, which descends into the valley on a 52° slope (the steepest incline railway in the world). It passes through a tunnel, and then an area of ancient rainforest, before you reach the bottom.
  • The historic Zig Zag Railway, built between 1866 and 1869 to negotiate the steep descent from Mount Victoria to the Lithgow Valley. Considered one of the great engineering feats of its day, the railway connected Sydney to the agricultural lands of the Western Plains.
  • The Jenolan Caves, south of Hartley, where you'll find astonishing limestone formations in a network of caves. Tours run daily.
  • Hartley Historic Site, which conserves the remains of the prosperous 19th-century town of Hartley. You can wander around the historic buildings, and take a tour of the old court house.
  • The Maxvision Edge Cinema in Katoomba, which has a six-storey-high screen. The cinema shows footage of the national parks and recreational activities of the Blue Mountains area, focusing on the discovery of the Wollemi pine.

There are plenty of other commercial tours and excursions in the mountains. Some you'd expect to find: horse riding, mountain biking, canoeing, 4WD touring, canyoning and the like. But how about chauffeur-driven Harley-Davidson tours, open-top World War Two jeep drives and paddlewheel cruises? For more information on what's available, check out the links below.
