NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) will commence major repairs to the Bare Island Bridge in Kamay Botany Bay National Park in early 2026, requiring a 12-month closure for public safety during essential works.

The Bare Island Bridge has been restricted to pedestrian access since December 2024 following a structural review and damage to timber decking.

The repairs aim to restore safe access for visitors and support cultural, educational and recreational activities, including scuba diving, fishing and school excursions.

During the works, Bare Island and the bridge will remain closed to the public. A base of operations for construction will be established on site.

Minor traffic disruptions are expected along the Anzac Parade loop road during scheduled works. NPWS will provide updates to help visitors plan ahead.

Fans of the blockbuster Mission: Impossible 2 will be familiar with the Bare Island bridge which was featured in the movie. Shot in Sydney 25 years ago, the explosive finale action scenes were filmed on location.

The project is part of the Kamay Botany Bay National Park Plan of Management and will involve consultation with Randwick Council, Transport for NSW and the community. Consultation was undertaken with targeted stakeholders in October 2025 ahead of repairs.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service South Sydney Area Manager, Ben Khan said:

"Bare Island is one of Sydney’s most iconic heritage sites, and the stunning location and rich history make it a favourite for visitors.

“These essential works will ensure the long-term heritage, safety and accessibility of Bare Island for visitors well into the future.

“NPWS thanks Randwick Council and Transport for NSW for their support minimising disruption while keeping the community informed.

“We appreciate the community’s patience during the closure and encourage everyone to plan ahead as we work through this project.“
