Hazard reduction burn for Biamanga National Park
The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is planning a hazard reduction burn on the South Coast near Bermagui in Biamanga National Park off Westrops Road and Pigs Crossing Road on Monday 12th May, weather permitting.
The hazard reduction burn intends to treat approximately 176-hectares of bushland approximately 6.5 kilometres west of Bermagui.
Hazard reduction burns are essential to reduce bushfire fuel loads to help protect parks, neighbours as well as the Bermagui and Cobargo communities in the event of future bushfires.
Planned low to moderate intensity burns also aim to improve the park’s biodiversity and provide safer access for firefighters.
Road closures will be in place on Westrops Road, intersection of Nutley’s Creek Road and Kangaroo Ridge Road, intersection of Nutley’s Creek Road and Myrtle Trail and intersection of Nutley’s Creek Road and Myrtle Link Trails. Smoke warning and burn in progress signs will also be in place.
For their safety, the public should not enter this area while the operation is underway. Roads and trails will be reopened once the area is assessed as safe. Visitors must check NPWS Alerts for up-to-date information on closures.
Smoke may be visible to visitors in other areas of the national park and from surrounding areas, including the township of Bermagui and Cobargo. If you are vulnerable to smoke, try to stay indoors, keeping doors and windows closed to reduce your exposure.
Motorists should use caution when driving on Nutley’s Creek Road and Cobargo-Bermagui Road.
People with known health conditions can sign up to receive air quality reports, forecasts and alerts via email or SMS from the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.
Details on specific burns are made available in advance on the Rural Fire Service website, Hazards Near Me app, and on NPWS Alerts website.
