Hazard reduction burn in Torrington State Conservation Area

Department media release Hazard reduction burn National Parks and Wildlife Service Fire News and media releases

National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) will conduct a hazard reduction burn in the Torrington State Conservation Area tomorrow, Thursday 20 August, and Friday 21 August.

The 1,000-hectare burn is located north of Stannum, approximately 10 km east of the Torrington township.

The aim of the burn is to reduce the amount of vegetation available to fuel wildfires ahead of the summer bushfire season.

It is expected the residents of Torrington and Stannum, and the other rural properties will be affected by smoke over the next two days.

People with asthma or other respiratory problems are advised to keep clear of the area or stay indoors, close windows and doors, and follow their health plan.

People with known health conditions can sign up to receive air quality reports, forecasts and alerts via email or SMS from the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.

For health information relating to smoke from bushfires and hazard reduction burns, visit NSW Health or Asthma Australia.

This burn is one of many hazard reduction operations undertaken by NPWS across NSW each year, many with assistance from the Rural Fire Service and Fire and Rescue NSW.

More information on hazard reduction activities is available at NSW Rural Fire Service and the NSW Government's Hazards Near Me website and app.
