Hazard reduction burns in Nightcap National Park and Border Ranges National Park
NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is planning a 133-hectare hazard reduction burn on Tuesday 16 September 2025 in Nightcap National Park on the north coast, weather permitting.
NPWS will also conduct a 13-hectare hazard reduction burn at the same time in Border Ranges National Park, just north-west of Nightcap National Park.
Smoke is expected to be visible from vantage points across the region, particularly for Nightcap National Park.
The purpose of the burn in Nightcap National Park is to reduce available fuel load along the ridge between the rock formation known as ‘the Sphinx’ and Mount Burrell, which will help protect the World Heritage-listed ancient Gondwanan Rainforest conserved through this national park, and neighbouring properties.
It will also germinate the endangered Border Ranges Daisy.
The purpose of the Border Ranges National Park burn will be to germinate the vulnerable plant Pretty Eyebright, which grows best in recently burned habitat.
NPWS thanks neighbours for their understanding. People with asthma or who are susceptible to respiratory issues are advised to keep clear of the area or stay indoors.
All burns across NSW are coordinated in partnership with the Rural Fire Service and Fire and Rescue NSW to ensure the impact on the community, including from smoke, are assessed at a regional level.
Details on specific burns will be made available in advance on the Rural Fire Service website, Hazards Near Me app and on the NPWS Alerts website.
