Hazard reduction burns – Sapphire Coast area

The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is planning two hazard reduction burns starting tomorrow, Wednesday 22 April, near Bombala and Cooma.

The hazard reduction burns will be undertaken over the next three days in the Bondi Gulf Nature Reserve south of Bombala, commencing on 22 April, and Lone Pine in Wadbilliga National Park east of Cooma, on 23 April.

These burns are part of the NPWS planned hazard reduction program to reduce the spread of bushfire and improve protection for the reserves, neighbours and nearby communities.

Drivers are advised to drive to conditions as smoke may impact nearby areas and roads.

NPWS will be assisted by Forestry Corporation NSW crews, and these burns are just some of many being undertaken by NPWS across NSW, as conditions allow.

For their safety, the public should not enter closed areas while the operations are underway.

Roads and trails will be reopened once the areas are assessed as safe. Visitors must check NPWS Alerts for up-to-date information on closures.

Planned burns also aim to improve biodiversity and provide safer access for firefighters. 

People with known health conditions can sign up to receive air quality reports, forecasts and alerts via email or SMS from the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.
