Hazard reduction burn in Wallamba Nature Reserve

Department media release Hazard reduction burn Wallamba Nature Reserve National Parks and Wildlife Service Park Fire News and media releases

National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) will be conducting a hazard reduction burn in Wallamba Nature Reserve, south of Nabiac on the State’s mid north coast, tomorrow Wednesday 15th October 2025.

The purpose of the 213 hectares burn is to reduce fuel loads to assist in the protection of neighbouring assets and to aid in the suppression of bushfire in the area.

The burn will begin around 9am, with further burning, mop up and patrol continuing on the following days as required.

NPWS crews will be working on roads and fire trails within Wallamba Nature Reserve for the duration of the burn.

People are reminded to exercise caution and follow directions of NPWS crews if driving on the roads in the area.

This burn is one of the many that NPWS is working hard to carry out in national parks across the region during spring.

Hazard reduction burns are essential to reduce bushfire fuel loads to help protect the parks, neighbours and communities from future bushfires.

Smoke may affect the area and people with asthma or other respiratory problems are advised to keep clear of the area or stay indoors, close windows and doors, and follow their health plan.

NPWS conducts controlled burns for a range of purposes, including asset protection, strategic fire control, maintenance of biodiversity and research.

This burn is one of many hazard reduction operations undertaken by NPWS across NSW each year, many with assistance from RFS and Rescue NSW.

These hazard reduction burns are essential to reduce bushfire fuel loads to help protect the parks.

People with known health conditions can sign up to receive air quality reports, forecasts and alerts via email or SMS from the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.
