NPWS conducts hazard reduction at The Basin Nature Reserve
The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service is conducting a hazard reduction in The Basin Nature Reserve west of Guyra over the next few days, starting on 22 March 2023.
NPWS Area Manager Aaron Simmon said the burn was aimed at reducing fuel loads on the dominant ridges throughout the reserve, to reduce the fire risk from future lightning storms.
“We are taking advantage of the predicted weather conditions to initiate this burn,” said Mr Simmon.
“The hazard reduction burn is expected to cover approximately 2,200 ha of the remote nature reserve, 50 km west of Guyra.
“This is one of 4 local hazard reduction burns covering 7,000 ha planned to be carried out by NPWS before summer 2023, pending favourable weather.
“Guyra, Ben Lomond and Armidale may experience some smoke haze, particularly in the late evening and early morning, possibly for a couple of days.
“There will be a number of NPWS fire-fighting units driving and working in the vicinity for several days during the operation,” Mr Simmon said.
