NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, with the Rural Fire Service and Fire Rescue NSW, will be undertaking 4 hazard reduction burns across the Sydney basin over next few days.

On Thursday August 3 burns are planned for Marramarra National Park near Maroota north of Sydney on the Hawkesbury River.

Another burn is planned for Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, near Towlers Bay north of Sydney.

On Friday August 4 burns are planned for Heathcote National Park near Heathcote, along with Sydney Harbour National Park in Vaucluse.

The prescribed burns will commence from 10:00am on Thursday, with further mop-up patrols by National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) expected to continue over the weekend.

Public access to the burn areas will be restricted until they are considered safe.

Visitors are advised to check the NPWS Alerts website for up-to-date information on closures as NPWS fire crews will continue to mop up and patrol the burn areas into next week.

Hazard reduction burns are essential to reduce bushfire fuel loads to help protect parks, neighbours and communities from future bushfires.

Smoke may affect the surrounding areas and people with asthma or other respiratory problems are advised to keep clear of the areas or stay indoors, close windows and doors, and follow their health plan.

People with known health conditions can sign up to receive air quality reports, forecasts and alerts via email or SMS from the Department of Planning and Environment.

For health information relating to smoke from bush fires and hazard reduction burning, visit the NSW Health website or Asthma Australia.

More information on hazard reduction activities is available at NSW Rural Fire Service and the NSW Government Hazards Near Me website and app.
