NSW leading the way in private land conservation
New South Wales is leading the way in measuring and monitoring private land conservation. The NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust has been granted accreditation under the internationally recognised Accounting for Nature Framework, which confirms private landholders in New South Wales are using world-best practices to manage their land.
The Biodiversity Conservation Trust works with willing landholders across New South Wales to establish and manage agreements to protect native plants and animals on privately-owned land. More than 2,000 landholders have entered into long-term agreements which see them financially rewarded to maintain and enhance biodiversity on their property.
The agreement sites are monitored by a team of regional ecologists to ensure biodiversity values are maintained or improved over time, using a set of rigorous methods. The methods can be repeated over time to consistently track change.
The Accounting for Nature accreditation recognises that these methods are in accordance with the highest international standard. It gives all stakeholders an added layer of certainty that the Trust’s data collection and reporting is rigorous, robust and accountable.
Accounting for Nature is an independent, verifiable and certifiable environmental accounting framework to inform better investment, policy and management decisions in natural capital. Accounting for Nature works with farmers, indigenous land managers, private conservation organisations, businesses, governments and regional natural resource management organisations.
Quotes attributable to Minister for the Environment Penny Sharpe:
“If you can’t measure it, you can’t improve it. The Biodiversity Conservation Trust and the farmers and landholders it works with can now confidently state their method of measuring and monitoring biodiversity meets world-leading standards.
“Measuring biodiversity is critical for conservation, as it helps us understand whether actions are improving or degrading native vegetation, soil, native fauna, and freshwater or marine assets.”
