Following the 2019–20 fire season, the NSW Bushfire Inquiry 2020 acknowledged the need for an improved coordination and capability for wildlife response in bushfires and other natural disasters. Reviews following the recent flood events throughout New South Wales (2020, 2021 and 2022) also recognised the need for enhancing coordination and capability for responding to wildlife impacted by non-fire emergencies.
The NPWS wildlife response during emergencies guidelines sets out the arrangements for prevention, preparedness, response and recovery.
The guidelines were first published in June 2024 and were republished in December 2025 with minor corrections.
