Reverse auction status
The February-March 2023 reverse auction is now closed.
The next reverse auction will be held in mid-2023.
About the Supply Fund
The Supply Fund is buying credits based on demand from development and infrastructure projects. Credits will be sold to public or private sector proponents who need credits to offset the biodiversity impacts of their projects, or other buyers who may seek credits for philanthropic or strategic purposes.
The Supply Fund is operated by the Department of Planning and Environment with the aim of making credits easier to sell and buy, improving the functioning of the biodiversity market. The department will apply fair, transparent and ethical processes and decision-making when buying and selling credits through the Supply Fund.
Biodiversity credits are generated through Biodiversity Stewardship Agreements. The sale of credits provides funding for landholders to improve the management of pests, weeds and fire and restore habitat. If you are seeking to generate credits, you can use our Stewardship Expression of Interest (EOI).
Operating Protocol
The Operating Protocol document sets out how the Supply Fund operates. It covers governance, ways demand and supply will be identified, methods for buying and selling credits, and monitoring and reporting.

February-March 2023 reverse auction results
During the auction, 54 bids were made to offer more than 227,000 credits. Credits were offered for 23 of the 48 target ecosystem credit types and 16 of the 66 target species credit types.
Bids were evaluated against price-based criteria which considered price competitiveness, Biodiversity Conservation Fund (BCF) charge estimates, and past market sales. Market sounding was undertaken to confirm buyer interest and willingness to pay.
As a result, 28,000 credits were approved for purchase, totalling around $70 million. The funds will go towards conserving:
- White Box - Yellow Box - Blakely's Red Gum Grassy Woodland
- Pilliga Outwash Dry Sclerophyll Forest
- North-west Floodplain Woodlands
- Semi-arid Floodplain Grasslands
- Carbeen Open Forest
- Floodplain Transition Woodlands
- Western Slopes Dry Sclerophyll Forests
- Coolibah-Black Box Woodland
- threatened plants and animals such as the Koala, Winged Peppercress, Slender Darling Pea, Tylophora linearis, Eastern Pygmy Possum and Southern Myotis.
For credits not being purchased, the Taskforce offers credit owners opportunities to promote credits for sale, to help fund conservation activities. We are receiving more interest from credit buyers every week, and our forecast of demand is expanding.
The next reverse auction will be held in mid-2023.
