The Great Big Little Penguin Count 2025

The 2025 Great Big Little Penguin Count is now underway.

The 2025 Great Big Little Penguin Count has begun, with surveys taking place across key NSW breeding sites, including:

  • Manly
  • Lion Island
  • Barunguba Montague Island
  • Bowen Island
  • Snapper Island
  • Brush Island
  • Wasp Island
  • Belowla Island.

Conducting the count across these locations helps scientists build a clearer picture of little penguin numbers and where they breed.

The data collected will be vital to:

  • track population trends over time
  • understand the effects of environmental pressures
  • strengthen conservation efforts to safeguard the species.

As part of the Great Big Little Penguin Count, University of New South Wales Sydney PhD candidate Lucy Ockert is working with Taronga Conservation Society on genomic research, with support from the Seabirds to Seascapes program.
