Initial training to become accredited

Discover the training requirements to become a Biodiversity Assessment Method assessor.

Before you embark on accreditation training

Please consider if you need to become an accredited assessor to complete your work. Becoming an accredited assessor requires a significant investment. You do not need to be accredited to:

  • prepare general flora and fauna reports including targeted surveys and site management plans or undertake pre-clearing surveys
  • support field work that contributes to the application of the Biodiversity Assessment Method.

Accreditation to apply the Biodiversity Assessment Method (BAM) is required if your role includes finalising assessment data in the BAM-C and certifying biodiversity assessment reports.

Assessor accreditation training

To become an accredited assessor to apply the Biodiversity Assessment Method, you must complete the accredited assessor training course before you can apply for accreditation. This training is competency-based, requiring you to demonstrate:

  • knowledge of the Biodiversity Offsets Scheme
  • competency in the use of the Biodiversity Assessment Method, including allocating plant community types and threatened ecological communities based on field data collection
  • competency in using the Biodiversity Assessment Method Calculator.

About the course

There are 2 parts to the training course:

  • Part 1 – Pre-learning: Twelve eLearning modules and associated assessment tasks – completed before attendance at the face-to-face webinars. We will send you more information about how to access these modules in the month before the course.
  • Part 2 – Face-to-face webinar: A 3-day webinar, a compulsory one-day field day (own transport required), and assessment tasks to be finished shortly after the course (dates provided below).

Assessment tasks: You will need to complete the assessment tasks outside course hours and submit within 5 days of the course. Please set aside time as you will need to complete quizzes and prepare credit calculations in a case study. You may be required to complete a second attempt on any outstanding questions.

Fees and charges

The cost is $4,000.

Before registering

Please review the accreditation criteria, particularly the demonstration of technical skills, and familiarise yourself with the accreditation application form (DOCX 138KB). This will ensure that you are aware of the requirements you need to demonstrate for your application to be successful.

If you have any questions about the training, please email us at [email protected].

Registration steps

To register and pay to attend these courses, please create an account in the Biodiversity Assessor Accreditation System (BAAS). You can then select which course you wish to attend in BAAS.

Course occurrences may be amended if insufficient enrolments are received for a particular training webinar. In this event, the BAM Training and Accreditation Team will contact students to amend their enrolment.
