Local government resources for koala conservation

These resources have been developed for local councils to use in the conservation and management of koalas and other wildlife.

Councils play a key role in managing their local environment. This includes protecting the environment, managing threats to native animals, and educating the community about local animals, plants and ecosystems.

These resources have been developed for councils and local communities to use to:

  • support koalas and their habitat
  • manage or maintain natural environments in their local area
  • increase awareness about threats to koalas and other wildlife, such as vehicle strike and attack by domestic dogs.

Habitat restoration

Habitat restoration helps conserve koala populations by repairing damage and reducing fragmentation of their habitat.

For evidence-based recommendations and best-practice methods for restoring koala habitat see our Koala habitat restoration guidelines.

Koala management areas

Seven koala management areas have been created to support conservation work with koalas and improve their habitat.

The koala management areas provide regional divisions across New South Wales, partly based on the distribution of preferred koala food trees and partly on local council boundaries to make management of resources easier.

Restoring habitat by region

These koala habitat restoration webpages provide information specific to each koala management area, including practical ways koala habitat can be revegetated.

Koala vehicle strike fact sheets

These fact sheets provide information about the impacts of vehicle strike on koalas and how this can be reduced.
