Update April 2023

April 2023

Stage 3 now open

The third stage of the Snowies Alpine Walk in Kosciuszko National Park has opened. This stage of the walk runs between Charlotte Pass and Perisher.

The new 13 km section of track, which includes upgrades to the short Porcupine walk, allows visitors to experience the incredible views of Thredbo Valley, Bullocks Flat and the Main Range.

The Snowies Alpine Walk is being constructed in 4 stages:

  • Stage 1 – re-routing the Mount Lee section of the Main Range walk (now open)
  • Stage 2 – Guthega to Charlotte Pass walk (now open)
  • Stage 3 – Charlotte Pass to Perisher walk (now open)
  • Stage 4 – Perisher to Bullocks Flat walk (under construction).

The fourth and final stage is due for completion in summer 2023–24 and will see the full multi-day walk launched.

There’s a lot of work happening in the region, so always check NPWS alerts for the latest park closure information. Situations may change day-to-day, especially as we move into winter, so check in regularly to ensure you have the latest information.

Interesting facts

To complete the Charlotte Pass to Perisher section of the Snowies Alpine Walk we installed:

  • 1,665 m of elevated steel-mesh walkway
  • 6,734 m of rock paving
  • 1,263 m of gravel hardened track
  • 861 rock steps
  • 196 drains.

Stage 4 update – Perisher to Bullocks Flat

Stage 4 of the Snowies Alpine Walk will complete the world-class, 55-km, multi-day walk. The construction of Stage 4 includes:

  • 11.4 km of new walking tracks
  • upgrades to car parking facilities, amenities and signage.

This is the final stage in the 4-stage project to connect the villages of Thredbo, Charlotte Pass, Guthega, Perisher and Bullocks Flat. The Snowies Alpine Walk will enhance tourism in the region.

Significant progress has been made on Stage 4 in recent months despite unseasonal snow fall in the region in late 2022 and February 2023. Approximately 1 km of steel platform, including stairs, has been installed to protect sensitive habitats and cross steep sections of the track. Work is continuing on construction of the sub-alpine section of track and along the Thredbo River with a mix of rock paving and gravel tracks being installed.

Construction has commenced at the Perisher track head and planning is underway to upgrade the carpark, signage and other facilities for visitors. Parking will be very limited during these works and there may be some diversions around the construction site.

The final section of the Snowies Alpine Walk is due for completion in summer 2023–24.

Please remember to always check NPWS alerts for the latest closure information before visiting Kosciuszko National Park.
