Upgrade works at Green Cape Lightstation precinct

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service is upgrading the Green Cape Lightstation precinct to improve safety, access and amenity.

A contractor has been appointed for the Stage 1 internal refurbishment and roof replacement of the Green Cape Cottages.

The work is expected to take place from July to December 2025, subject to weather and other potential construction delays.

Works include:

  • internal refurbishment of the 4 Lightstation cottages
  • roof replacements for the Assistant and Head Lightkeeper's buildings, Battery Room, The Stables and Telegraph Station.

The Lightstation cottage and telegraph station accommodation will be closed to visitors from 1 July to 31 December 2025. Closures may be extended if there are construction delays.

Green Cape car park, lookout and surrounding walking tracks will remain open. Updates will be provided regarding reopening for bookings for visitor accommodation.

Planning for the Stage 2 services upgrade and landslip repair is also underway. These works are required to upgrade the gas, electrical and sewerage systems and to remediate a landslip that occurred in 2022. Further consultation will be undertaken regarding the timing and any necessary closures.

Green Cape Lighthouse reinstatement

We are working in collaboration with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority to reinstate the Green Cape Lighthouse as a working lighthouse.

Green Cape Lighthouse was built in 1883 and was the first cast concrete lighthouse tower in Australia. At the time of building, it was the largest mass concrete structure in New South Wales and it is the tallest of the 3 concrete lighthouses designed by the Colonial Architect of NSW, James Barnet. It is one of the state's historic lighthouses and has a long association with coastal shipping and the economic development of the south coast.

The project will also involve removing the steel lattice tower erected in 1988, which currently serves as the active navigation structure within the Green Cape Lightstation precinct.
