Kamay Botany Bay National Park: update May 2025

An interpretation plan has been released for public comment, and construction of the visitor centre is progressing.

New interpretation plan released for consultation

The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has prepared a new interpretation plan as part of the infrastructure upgrades at Kurnell, to guide new interpretation that will be installed as part of the works. A significant body of work related to storytelling and interpretation at Kurnell has been completed since 2007.

The new interpretation plan has reviewed and considered this previous work and existing interpretation devices to develop a sustainable, respectful and consistent approach to revising and refreshing interpretation at Kamay.

This plan is available to download from the project webpage from 9 May 2025. Comments and feedback can be made via the webpage or by emailing the project team until 6 June 2025 at [email protected].

Visitor centre construction update

The new visitor centre is taking shape! The contractors have completed the ground works, with the foundations and ground floor concrete slab now in place. The building’s steel structure has begun to be erected and the roof form is starting to come together.

Installation of in-ground services will include a rainwater tank, new fire hydrants and a geothermal heat pump.

Construction is still currently on track for completion in 2026.

Foreshore path works

Construction of new pathways within Commemoration Flat is progressing.

A new path behind Alpha House and the section of path near the Solander Monument to the new Commemoration Flat amenity building have been completed.

Sections of pathway completing the connection between Monument Track are close to completion. The construction of the final section of this path leading to the new visitor centre will commence when the others path works are complete.

There will be minor disruption to the Commemoration Flat carpark during the foreshore path works to allow safe access to Commemoration Flat by the contractor.

Installation of upgraded service connections to the Commemoration Flat amenity building will also occur concurrently with the final section of path works.

Other works programmed for completion throughout 2025 and 2026 include:

  • New planting will take place within the cricket pitch precinct, including trees and around the visitor centre.
  • New upgraded water and electrical services will replace the aged and undersized existing services.
  • Improved access will be incorporated in all works, with new compliant pathways and parking.

Visitation impacts

Major precincts are now closed in Kurnell. Refer to the above plans for extent of closures. If you’re planning to visit, please be aware that major precincts will be closed during the construction phase, and signage and fencing will be in place during this time.

Some work areas will be relocated progressively as work elements such as paths and inground services are constructed. Please check the current alerts when planning your visit.
