Bushfire closes sections of Nightcap National Park

Media release: 15 September 2014

A bushfire which started in Nightcap National Park, west of Byron Bay yesterday is still being brought under control.

National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) Area Manager, John Fisher, said that the fire, which started in suspicious circumstances on Sunday, is still burning on Minyon Falls Road.

"The Minyon Falls area of the national park is now closed and there is no access to Minyon Falls or Minyon Grass Picnic Areas.

"There is also no access for bushwalking, horseriding or mountain biking in this section", Mr Fisher said.

"Rummery Park Camping Area, within Whian Whian State Conservation Area remains open, however visitors need to access the camping area through Nightcap Range Road.

"Members of the public need to be aware that this is a bushfire, not a hazard reduction burn.

"Rural Fire Service and NPWS fire crews are working to bring the blaze, which is burning in the dry sclerophyll forest along Minyon Falls road, under control.

"While there is currently no access to the Minyon Falls section of Nightcap National Park, the Terania Creek and Mount Nardi sections remain open."
