Bongil Picnic Area open for use

Media release: 8 January 2016

Bongil Picnic Area near Bonville, in Bongil Bongil National Park, has recently undergone an upgrade by the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS).

NPWS Area Manager Glenn Storrie said works include improved picnic shelters and extensive landscaping works.

“If you’re looking for a shady, quiet place in a beautiful natural setting to enjoy a family barbeque or picnic close to Coffs Harbour then this is the place for you,” Mr Storrie said.

“This major picnic ground on the north bank of Bonville Creek has bitumen access and provides gas-fired barbeques, a pontoon for fishing or launching small watercraft, a viewing platform overlooking the creek and the scenic mountain rim to the west and a large lawn area for the kids to play on,” he said.

“The area provides paved paths so is wheelchair accessible, including to the large toilet block and has abundant seating and undercover areas if you need some precious shade.

“It is also a great place for a family cruise on push bikes.

“The site is also accessible for walkers and bicyclists via the gravelled Lyons Trail from Lyons Road Toormina and provides a start / finish point for a great 5 kilometre return bush walk along the North Bank Trail to Moller Drive at West Sawtell,”  Mr Storrie  said.

This bush walk follows the bank of Bonville Creek through riparian forest with fascinating birdlife to be observed along the way.

The Bongil Picnic Area in Bongil Bongil National Park, can be found at the end of Williams Road, Bonville, and is just ten minutes by car south of Coffs.

For further information on this great holiday destination please feel free to call the Coffs Coast Area NPWS office on 6652 0900.
