Construction of the Yathong Nature Reserve feral predator-free area has started.

Planning phase is complete

Planning and approvals for the 40,000-hectare feral predator-free area within Yathong Nature Reserve has been completed, including:

  • all relevant environmental and Aboriginal cultural heritage assessments
  • a decision statement for the review of environmental factors 
  • baseline ecological surveys.

Construction has started

Construction work is underway, beginning with the northern part of the proposed 40,000-hectare site. This area will enclose 8,200 hectares of the reserve, with a fence length of 40.4 kilometres.

Construction works include:

  • clearing the fence corridor
  • upgrading and/or establishing perimeter trails
  • installing the specially designed conservation fence to exclude feral cats and foxes.

Updates on local conditions

There will be no impact to main roads or people travelling by vehicle through Yathong Nature Reserve. The main roads will remain open during the construction period:

  • Yathong Road
  • Merri Road
  • Kidman Way
  • Round Hill Road.

Management trails within the reserve will be subject to temporary closures throughout the construction phase, including:

  • Western management trail
  • Greens management trail.
