Energy savings and resource efficiency

Government assistance

There are two main government initiatives that support commercial solar in NSW.

  • Renewable Energy Target (RET)
  • Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC)

Systems up to 100kW

Solar systems up to 100kW are considered to be small-scale and are supported b the Renewable Energy Target through the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme.

This scheme generates certificats which are traded to create subsidies for renewable energy projects.

For businesses investing in small-scale solar projects they assign your certificates to your solar retailer. The retailer will then discount the cost of the solar system accordingly. The discount will be around 30-40 per cent.

Systems over 100kW

Solar projects over 100kW come under the Large-scale Renewable Energy Target. This is a complex certificate trading scheme. The scheme provides financial incentives for the generation of energy from renewable sources.

Systems over 200kW

Solar projects over 200kW are supported by the Large-scale Renewable Energy Target and the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC).

The CEFC is an Australian government owned corporation that has developed financing to assist businesses more easily access finance for renewable projects.

The CEFC typically partners with banks and other commercial lenders and aims to reduce the cost of borrowing for projects.
