NSW Atlas of Aboriginal Places

What is an Aboriginal Place?

Aboriginal Places are places of special cultural significance to the Aboriginal people in NSW for instance because of their spiritual, ceremonial, historical, social, or educational values. Over 70 Aboriginal Places have been declared in NSW since 1974.

Using the Atlas of Aboriginal Places

The Atlas comprises a map and table of declared Aboriginal Places in NSW. For each Aboriginal place you will find information describing the place and a summary of why it is important to Aboriginal people.

An overview of Aboriginal Places in NSW comprises a short history, types of Places and numbers of Places declared to 2011.

Types of places

Aboriginal Places can be divided into the following types:

  • Sacred site: A place of spiritual and/or ceremonial importance for Aboriginal people.
  • Burial ground: A place containing one or more Aboriginal graves.
  • Settlement: A place where Aboriginal people lived during the period after 1788 (e.g. Mission)
  • Other: Other places, including resource sites and gathering places.

Note about location information

The location of each Aboriginal Place is marked on the map as a single centre-point. The area and boundaries of the Aboriginal Places are not shown. Location information for some Aboriginal Places (e.g. burial grounds and sacred sites) have been generalised because of their cultural sensitivity.

Location information is approximate only. If an activity or development is proposed that may potentially impact on or harm (i.e., damage, deface or destroy) an Aboriginal Place, then proponents must undertake a search for the exact boundaries of Aboriginal Places through AHIMS Web Services.
