NSW ceiling insulation rebate

Supplementary Image

Almost a quarter of energy use in NSW homes is used for heating and cooling. By keeping your home cooler in summer and warmer in winter, ceiling insulation means air-conditioners and heaters can be used more efficiently, saving money and greenhouse gas emissions.

How much is the rebate?

The rebate covers half the cost of installing ceiling insulation in your home, up to a maximum of $300.

It is available for any type of thermal insulation materials for ceilings, installled in residential properties in NSW.

The total sum of payments[1] you are receiving cannot exceed the total cost[2] of your installed ceiling insulation.  Please note that you can request a reduced payment for your NSW rebate if the total payments would exceed the cost if it was paid in full.

[1] Includes payments from the NSW and Australian Government rebates, and any local government and/or energy retailer incentives.
[2]The total cost of your new ceiling insulation includes the purchase, delivery and installation costs.

Eligibility

The ceiling insulation must:

  • cover the entire ceiling area
  • comply with the Australian Standard for insulation - AS/NZS 4859.1:2002
  • be purchased in full, and installed between 1 October 2007 and 30 June 2009
  • meet a minimum R-value for your local government area

Insulation installed to comply with BASIX (the Building Sustainability Index) for new homes or major renovations is not eligible for a rebate.

What are R-values?

The thermal efficiency of insulation is measured by its R-value. The higher the R-value, the more resistant the insulation is to heat flowing into and out of the home. All insulation that meets the Australian Standard has its R-value clearly marked.

To be eligible for a rebate, the insulation you install must meet the minimum R-value for your local government area. Check the minimum R-values for all NSW councils on the listing of minimum R-values.

Applying for the rebate

You apply for the rebate after the insulation is installed. You will need to:

  • Read and agree to the Terms and Conditions of the rebate offer
  • Read the Ceiling Insulation Rebate brochure (09440CeilingInsReb.pdf, 906KB)
  • Complete the Application Form (09402CeilingInsRebForm.pdf, 231KB) and sign it
  • attach evidence that the insulation meets the required minimum R-value

When will I get the rebate?

The Australian Government insulation rebate has resulted in a large number of applications to the NSW rebate program.  It is currently taking around 90 days for you to receive your rebate cheque, from the time we receive your completed application form and receipt(s).  We are working to reduce this timeframe.
