Water quality research

Water is essential to human life and to the health of the environment. It comprises marine, estuarine, freshwater (river and lakes) and groundwater, across coastal and inland areas. Water quality is commonly defined by its physical, chemical, biological and aesthetic (appearance and smell) characteristics.

OEH studies the quality of water in rivers, estuaries and oceans to assess the health of these waterways and ensure they provide good habitat for plants and animals.

Our scientists study sediment, nutrients and toxins in waterways and assess their impacts on the ecosystem.
