KYP cover

Demand for paper remains high with Australians using 1.72 million tonnes printing and writing paper during the 2006/07 financial year. Businesses are becoming increasingly aware of the need to consider the environmental impact of their purchases and practises. With high paper usage in Australia, businesses can create meaningful environmental savings and benefits by making informed purchasing decisions and choosing recycled products.

Know your paper assists anyone wishing to purchase recycled office paper. It has:

  • a list of all office papers that contain some recycled fibre and are available in Australia

  • up-to-date product and performance information for the recycled papers

  • contact details for companies that supply the papers

  • facts regarding the environmental impact of paper manufacture and the benefits of recycling; and

  • explanations for the labels and certifications that each paper holds.

Recycled content paper diverts paper from landfill by creating a demand for waste paper, consequently closing the loop on recycling at your workplace and home.

In addition to recycled office paper, businesses can reduce their impact on the environment through their choice of printing paper. Corporate stationery and promotional materials, such as letterhead, annual reports and brochures, form a significant portion of paper used by businesses. Printers, graphic designers and their customers can reduce their impact on the environment through informed purchasing decisions.

This guide, endorsed by the Printing Industries Association of Australia, has been produced to assist printers, graphic designers and their customers to choose recycled printing paper.

It includes:

  • a list of all printing papers that contain some recycled fibre available in Australia

  • updated product specifications and performance information for the recycled papers

  • contact details for paper suppliers

  • information regarding the environmental impact of paper manufacture; and

  • explanations for the labels and certifications that each paper product holds.

As with office paper, the success of paper recycling and the environmental benefits that flow from it partly depend on strong demand for recycled content paper products. Purchasing paper products made from recycled paper completes the cycle - conserving the resources needed to make it and avoiding the environmental impacts of waste sent to landfill.
