History

The Maianbar was carrying full load of livestock and produce when it left Jerseyville on the New South Wales north coast in May 1940.  On 5 May while under tow at the heads at Newcastle the towline snapped and the vessel touched the bottom, lost steering and drifted onto the southern beach.  Some of the livestock and grain was saved, as during low tide the vessel was dry.  Some attempts were made to refloat it, but they were unsuccessful.

The 487 ton steel screw steamer was built in 1910 in Ardrossan, Scotland.  The vessel was registered in Sydney and owned by The North Coast S. N. Co.
