A 358 ton wooden barque, the Lanercost was built at Harrington, United Kingdom, in 1865. The 37.7 metre vessel operated between the United Kingdom and Holland. The Lanercost was later sold to Australian interests and became wrecked near Mowarry Point, Twofold Bay, on 24 November 1872.
Loaded with 580 tons of coal, the vessel departed Newcastle for Adelaide when the disaster occurred, but there was no loss of life. Crew of a the local pilot boat attempted to get aboard but were thwarted by heavy seas breaking as high as the vessel's lower yards. Hopes of saving Lanercost were gone when the hull went to pieces against the reef. The Lanercost was commanded by Captain Simpson and owned by the Simpson family of Adelaide.
The wreck site has been located in ~24-30m.
