History

The Gwydir, a steel screw steamer used for coastal transport of cargo, was wrecked on 29 November 1894 at Norah Head when it ran into rocks during a fog while sailing from Sydney to Newcastle. The vessel was being mastered by Richard E Mannigal.

Owned by Newcastle and Hunter River SS Company, the Gwydir was 518 gross tons, 56.9m long with a 3.7m draft. Powered by a compound engine, it was built in South Shields, United Kingdom, in 1886 by John Readhead.
