Native forestry on public and private land

The EPA regulates the environmental impacts of logging on private and public lands to ensure that there is a balance between timber supply and maintaining environmental values. The EPA Forestry Section works with land managers, the community and industry to help ensure that logging on public and private land is sustainable.

Compliance activities

Ecologically sustainable forest management standards apply to all native forest operations.

The EPA oversees compliance with a Code of Practice for Private Native Forestry Operations.

The EPA also oversees compliance with integrated forestry operations approvals (IFOAs) and is responsible for maintaining the NSW Government’s commitments under the NSW Forest Agreements.

Compliance Strategies

To guide the regulation of native forestry, two compliance strategies have been developed for private and public land. The strategies incorporate a risk-based approach to compliance which ensures the EPA focuses its attention and resources on those areas that pose the greatest risk to the environment or are of major concern to the community.
