Golden Mother of Ducks party
Come and celebrate Mother of Ducks Nature Reserve's 50th birthday with some talking and twitching at Guyra’s incredibly important wetlands.
National Parks and Wildlife Service’s (NPWS) Acting Area Manager Trent Bull said everyone is welcome to the golden anniversary of the Reserve, Sunday 5 February 2023.
'Not only will this party bring the community together to celebrate this local landmark, we are also excited to show budding twitchers the extraordinary birdlife at the lagoon,' Mr Bull said.
'The area is a breeding place for several freshwater wetland bird species and a resting place for numerous migratory birds.
'Over the last 50 years we have recorded 18 threatened or significant bird species here, including the Australian Painted Snipe, Australasian Bittern, Curlew Sandpiper and Little Eagle.'
The 50th Anniversary of the Mother of Ducks Nature Reserve coincides with World Wetlands Day celebrations, a day marked around the world to increase people’s understanding of these critically important ecosystems.
“We’ll also have two tours running from 11.30–12.30pm, one led by a local Anaiwan man who will talk about the significance of this cultural landscape for the Anaiwan and Banbai Custodians,' Mr Bull said.
'The other tour will be taken by a NPWS Ranger for those wanting to learn more about the ecology, fauna and flora of the lagoon.
'Come and enjoy a barbecue lunch and a slice of cake while learning about the importance of this incredible lagoon and wetland system,' Mr Bull said.
The Golden Anniversary of the Mother of Ducks Nature Reserve is on Sunday 5 February, from 10.30am to 2pm. A light BBQ lunch and refreshments will be provided at the picnic area along McKie Drive, on the western side of the Guyra township.
