The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) together with the NSW Rural Fire Service will this week start the No. 1 Break burn at Timmallallie National Park, approximately 60km from Coonabarabran.

The burn will be carried out in a 900ha area of the Timmallallie National Park and will start around 10am on Tuesday 13 May, continuing through to Wednesday 14 May, weather permitting.

This burn aims to reduce fuel loads in a strategic fire advantage zone which will help minimise the spread of future wildfires in the Pilliga Forest.

Mopping up operations will continue for several days and public access to the burn area and surrounding roads will remain closed until 14 May, or until the area is assessed as safe. Drivers are advised to follow all signage and adjust their driving to the conditions.

Smoke may be visible for up to a week after the burn depending on wind direction. NPWS thanks the community and neighbours in advance for their understanding. People with asthma or who are susceptible to respiratory issues are advised to stay indoors.

All burns across NSW will continue to be coordinated with the RFS and FRNSW to ensure the impact on the community, including from smoke, are assessed at a regional level.

Details on specific burns will be made available in advance on the Rural Fire Service website, Hazards Near Me app, and on NPWS Alerts website.
