Wild weather forces precautionary closure of north coast national park visitor areas
With Tropical Cyclone Alfred bearing down on Northern NSW and South-East Queensland, the NSW National Park and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has taken the precautionary step of closing forested areas from Coffs Harbour to the NSW–Queensland border for public safety.
The predicted severe weather, including strong winds and flooding rain, means most campgrounds, day use areas and hard roofed accommodation will be temporarily closed from today, Wednesday 5 March, until at least Wednesday 12 March 2025.
Affected areas include:
- National parks – Border Ranges, Wollumbin, Mooball, Bundjalung, Bungawalbin and Nightcap
- Nature reserves – Ballina, Boatharbour, Bungawalbin, Davis Scrub, Little Pimlico Island, Tabbimoble Swamp, Tuckean, Tucki Tucki, Uralba, Wilson and Yarringully
- State Conservation Areas – Whian Whian, Jackywalbin, Bundjalung, Bungawalbin and Yarringully
- Aboriginal areas – Dubay Nurahm and Lennox Head
- The multi-day Gidjuum Gulganyi Walk along with the Tweed Range Scenic Drive.
Cape Byron Headland Reserve and Broken Head Nature Reserve will remain open, however, people are urged to consider carefully the need to visit during this period.
National park closures may change at short notice and people are urged to keep up to date by visiting the NPWS alerts webpage.
