Wild weather in Manning Myall and Hunter valleys force temporary closures
Flooding from significant rainfall in the Manning, Hunter and Myall River catchments has forced the temporary closure of many national parks from near Forster, Barrington Tops to Newcastle.
National park areas affected by the closures include:
- Coorabarkh, Tapin Tops, Goonoo, Brimbin, Talawhal, Khappinghat and Biriwal Bulga National Parks
- Myall Lakes National Park beach access, campgrounds and picnic areas
- Wallingat National Park
- Samurai campground and access track in Tomaree National Park
- Beachfront of the Worimi Conservation Lands
- Barrington Tops National Park and State Conservation Area
- Woko National Park
- Copeland Tops State Conservation Area
- Washpools Camping Area Towarri National Park.
The closures are expected to remain in place for some time until water levels recede, damage is assessed, and it is safe to reopen.
“The closures are for the safety of visitors and our staff,” National Parks and Wildlife Service Area Manager Tamara Campbell said.
“We are reaching out to people with bookings to reschedule where possible or cancel.”
“Booti Booti National Park south of Forster remains open, including the Ruins campground.”
“People are advised to stay safe and avoid affected areas. People should not drive, walk or play in floodwaters.”
“If you come across a flooded road, stop and find an alternative route.”
